This drawing records a painting now in the Timken Art Gallery in San Diego (inv. no. 1969.002; canvas, 99 x 129.5 cm; see Roethlisberger 1986, no. 168). It was made, together with its pendant of LV 104 (see BM inv. no. 1957,1214.110), for a client in Avignon, which is unsurprising given the ponitifical palace there and its contingent presence of Italians. The work is one of a plethora of paintings of pastoral scenes that Claude produced in the 1640s that combine motifs such as wooded landscapes, countryfolk and cattle, the latter of which recur extensively in Claude’s so-called Animal Album (on which see 1895,0915.916). In addition to the present record in the Liber Veritiatis (on which see 1957,1214.6), there are further three related drawings to this composition. The first is a figure drawing of the two individuals at the left of the composition and which is in the British Museum (see inv. no. Oo,6.42). The secnd is a circular drawing last recorded in the Wildenstein collection which focuses on the central part of the compostion, and in which the positions of the figures and animals are modified (see Rothesliberger 1968, no.610). The second is a highly finished pictorial drawing now in the Morgan (for which see Roethlisberger 1968, no.611).
