Kitson, Liber Veritatis:
Painting
Washington (DC), National Gallery of Art. Canvas, 112,3 x 149,5 cm; 1645-6. M. Röthlisberger in Burlington Magazine, CVIII, 1966, p. 316, and in National Gallery of Art, Report and Studies in the History of Art for 1969, pp. 44-54; R-C, 158. The drawing corresponds to the painting exactly. Rather unexpectedly for two paintings for the same patron recorded in two successive Liber Veritatis drawing, this and LV 93 are clearly not a pair; their compositions do not complement each other, they are not the same size, and they differ in tone, colour and atmosphere. LV93 is quiet in mood, restrained in handling and subdued in colour, whereas LV 94, though no less classical in design, is unusually bright and bold.
