- Curator's comments
- This drawing, together with seven others belonging to the British Museum (T,12.53; T,13.77; 1956,0216.1-6), was part of a sketch-book, probably with four other drawings in the Rijksmuseum.

The main group on the recto is a free copy of the l.-hand side of a Nereid sarcophagus relief known in its complete form from a copy in the Codex Coburgensis (Robert, v, 1: A. Rumpf, 'Die Meerwesen', 1939, no. 117, repr. fig. 71). Only the r.-hand side of the relief has survived, set into the garden-façade of the Villa Medici (M. Cagiano de Azvedo, 'Le Antichità di Villa Medici', Rome, 1951, pl. xxiii, fig. 34).
The Caryatid on the verso also occurs, drawn by Girolamo himself, on T. 127. It is a copy of one in the basamento of the Stanza di Eliodoro, below 'The expulsion of Heliodorus'. On the lower part of the basamento, now so faded that it can only be made out with the help of an ultra-violet lamp, is drawn a group of figures seated on the ground: on the r. a pair of satyrs with their backs to the spectator, one of whom is drinking from a bowl; to the l. is a maenad holding a thyrsus over her shoulder and on the far l. another satyr.
