- Curator's comments
- From the 'Cabinet Crozat' set; see 1907,1121.14 for comment.
For a later edition, with the chiaroscuro replaced by aquatint, see 1855,0609.118.
The original drawing is not the one now kept in the Louvre (inv. 3876, recto). Cordellier & Py ('Musée du Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Département des Arts graphiques, Inventaire général des Dessins Italiens, V : Raphaël, son atelier, ses copistes', Paris, 1992, cat. No. 492) indicate that Crozat's drawing was acquired by Gouvernet in the 1741 sale and remained in this collection until 1775, while the Louvre drawing is attested in the d'Este collection in 1770. Catherine Monbeig-Goguel identifies Crozat's drawing with a sheet in the Uffizi (inv. 14775) which is annotated at the back with a comment inspired by the text accompanying the corresponding plate in the Recueil Crozat (see Monbeig-Goguel, 'Raphael dans les collections françaises', Paris, 1983-1984, cat. No.119, p.309).
