- As Giordano Viroli first noted, the recto is a study for the painting of the 'Death of the Virgin' on the left wall of the third chapel on the left in the church of Sant'Apollinare, Ravenna of circa 1605. The study of the woman with a jug on the verso is related to a figure in the pendant painting of the 'Birth of the Virgin' (Scavizzi and Schwed nos. 47a and b, illustrated in colour on p. 156).

The circle surrounding the head of the recumbent figure on the recto is unmistakably a halo.
