- Curator's comments
- A number of these plates appear in "Raccolta De Vari Disegni Dell Cavalliero Pietro Leone Ghezzi [...], Potsdam 1766", see 1954,0211.3.1-42.
The following are references to the caricatures in this album:
no. 11: Rossi and Haar (Federico de Rossi and Christian Friedrich Horn).
The same print is found in “Raccolta de vari disegni […], Potsdam 1766, plate 25 (BM 1954,0211.3.1-42). The sitters have been identified as Christian Friedrich Horn and Federico de Rossi (see Maureen Cassidy-Geiger, “The Grand Cure 1738-1740: A disabled Saxon prince and his tour of Italy / Die Grande Kur 1738-1740: Prinz Friedrich Christian von Sachsen auf der Suche nach Heilung und Kultur in Italien”, Dresden 2018, exhibition booklet; and Gudula Metze’s entry for Dresden Kupferstichkabinett, inv. B 662,3/11 (18 January 2024)
A related full-length drawing is in the Vatican Library, Codex Ottoboniano Latino 3117, 10. Dated 1739, Ghezzi describes the sitters as a German musician, who visited Ghezzi’s music academy in Rome, and was at the service of the Prince Elector of Poland and the other as secretary of Count ‘Brilli’ (von Brühl) and a gentleman of the polish court. The print, as all the others in the series, claims that the original drawing was in von Brühl’s collection. For two profile caricatures of the sitters see BM 1871,0812.966.
no. 12: Bernardino Luchesini.
Numbered "12:" top right; in reverse: "Matthaeus Oesterreich Sculpsit Roma adi 24 August 1751 Etat A25"; "Cavalliere Pietro Leone Ghezzi Disegnò"; "Matteo Oesterreich Incise. Roma 1751"; "Bernardino Luchesini Bolognese / Il Disegno originale si conserva nel Gabinetto di Sua Ecellenza / Monsignore Conte de Brühl Primo Ministro di Sua Maestà // IL RÉ DI POLONIA ELETTORE DI SASSONIA".
The same print is found in “Raccolta de vari disegni […]”, Potsdam 1766, plate 26 (BM 1954,0211.3.1-42).
A bust length caricature of Luchesini is in Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica in Rome, inv. FN4661. Ghezzi there refers to him as Bernardino Luchesi and as a helper of the herbalist (‘semplicista’) opposite ‘Propagana Fide’ (see Antonella Pampalone, “I ‘volti’ della storia nelle caricature della collezione di Pier Leone Ghezzi (parte seconda)”, in Elisa de Benedetti (ed.), ‘700 disegnatore’, 1997, p. 106 and fig. 18). The so far unverifiable information that he was from Bologna was added on the present print lettering.
no. 13: Conte Marco M?: Numbered “13” top right. "MO [monogramm]"; in reverse: "Matthaeus Oesterreich fecit Dresda 1750 adi 15 Februaio"; "Gravé par Matthieu Oesterreich d'après le Dessein de Jean / Bapt. Internari / Tirè du Cabinet de S. E. Mons[e]g[n]r[eur]. le Prem[ier]: Ministre / Comte de Brühl".
The same print is found in “Raccolta de vari disegni […]”, Potsdam 1766, plate 31 (BM 1954,0211.3.1-42).
The only information available about the sitter is in the indexed list (found in BM 1954,0211.3.1-42), that he was in Dresden in 1752.
no. 14 Alessio Mattioli. Numbered: "14:" top right; bottom left signed in reverse: "Matthaeus Oesterreich fecit Roma Venezia Dresda 1752"; lettering bottom left: "Cavallier P. L. Ghezzi Del. Roma 1751:"; bottom right: "Matthaeus Oesterreich Sculps: 1752:"; centre.: "Alesio Matthioli / Compositore delli Musaici di Sant Pietro in Vaticano á Roma. / Tirè du Cabinet de S. E. Mons[e]g[n]r[eur]. le Prem[ier]: Ministre / Comte de Brühl."
A bust length caricature of Alessio Mattioli is in the Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica, Rome, inv. FN4705 (see Antonella Pampalone, “I ‘volti’ della storia nelle caricature della collezione di Pier Leone Ghezzi (parte seconda)”, in Elisa de Benedetti (ed.), ‘700 disegnatore’, 1997, fig. 126 (published in reverse). Pampalone importantly refers to a preparatory drawing of 1751 for the present print in the Gabinetto Comunale delle Stampe di Roma (inv. 12874), with the lettering in reverse (CHECK). An earlier caricature of Mattioli in the Vatican Library, Codex Ottoboniano Latino 3117, c. 126.
