- Curator's comments
- Probably a copy after a lost drawing by Gaudenzio. Workshop versions of the same composition are in the Uffizi, Florence (12766 F) and in the Accademia, Venice (inv. 49). Giovanni Agosti thinks that the BM drawing might be an original by Gaudenzio ('quello certamente più bello - che rischia di essere autografo - è conservato al British Museum'). Giovanni Romano describes the present drawing in the Rancate catalogue as 'molto vicino' to Gaudenzio, dates it to c. 1535, and believes that it might reflect a now lost prototype of the artist.
