- Curator's comments
- This is a fine example of Claude’s use of wash to construct an atmospheric urban scene, and is among a group of port scenes lit by the rising or setting sun. The resolved nature of this composition, with its inclusion of monuments such as the Arch of Titus and the Villa Medici, suggests that it was preparatory study for a painting, as too do the diagonals which suggest that the design was to be transferred to another support though no completed painting is known to exist. It is, however, worth noting that the figural grouping recurs in LV 96, which appears to represent the Embarkation of Ulysses. The present composition was instead associated by Roger Rand with an unrealised project for a depiction of the Embarkation of Saint Ursula.
