- Linked by Mahoney to the painting 'Diogenes discarding his bowl' (Copenaghen, Statens Museum for Kunst) on the grounds of the figure's posture and the direction of his gaze. However, the beard and bushy hair of this figure leaves interpretation open as it could be another of Rosa's 'types' of ancient philosophers and historical figures, such as the ones that occur in his 'Plato' and 'Belisarius' paintings.
