- This impression is pasted in an album together with other prints from the same publication supplemented with various other print series, for comment on the album see 1952,0117.14.1.
This plate was originally published in "P. Virgilii Opera ex antiquis monimentis illustrata cura", a Latin edition of Virgil's "Eclogues" and "Georgics", which is illustrated by Marco Alvise Pitteri and published by Henrici Justice in 1757-1765. In these illustrations Pitteri used a method of engraving he developed himself, using parallel lines, which are thickened at regular intervals along their length with more deeply engraved sections. The prints are cut from the original publication and some still bear the letterpress lettering on the verso.
