Text from Frances Carey & Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Gemany 1880-1933', BM 1984, no. 27
The title given this print defines the sitter as a working-class woman, and it is characteristic of Kollwitz's early work that it should do so. After the First World War she would not have made this print. It would not have been a portrait of an individual at all, let alone one from an identifiable social class, but an image of a woman suffering one of the ills of humanity - need, grief or despair.
The head and hands of the woman are drawn on the stone in chalk, while the background and her body are covered with a uniform obliterating black wash (though in the first state the wash is applied more lightly and the individual brush-marks are evident). This device derives directly from Munch's 'Self-portrait with skeleton arm' (1949,0411.4872), and it is interesting that Kollwitz used it for the first time in a portrait of her son Hans (Klipstein 30) only a year after Munch's portrait.
