Curator's comments
An annotation in the departmental copies of Russell and Whitman records another state, before letters but with margins cleaned, which would make this impression prior to Russell's state I. However this is confusing, unless the note refers either to an intermediary state with the margins partially cleaned, or a later, unlettered state with clean margins, since the margins in the scratched-letter state (see 1902,1011.2271) are not completely cleaned.
