- Curator's comments
- Philip Pouncey observed that there is a weaker version of this in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (Inv. 5747 'Anon Venetian') traditionally attributed to Marco Pino. The present work is placed as Bolognese because the extensive white heightening recalls the technique of artists like Biagio Pupini and Girolamo da Carpi, both of whom worked in the city. Bert Meijer's recent suggestion that it is by Lambert Sustris is unconvincing since it is differs so much from securely attributed drawings by the Netherlandish artist.
