See Popham's report to the Trustees for the provenance: 'The work belonged to Padre Sebastiano Resta, who procured it from Gasparo Mola, to whom it had descended from his grandfather, also called Gasparo Mola, engraver of medals to the Pope. Resta attributed it to Bramantino, but it appears to Mr Popham to be Florentine, near to Filippino Lippi. It is possibly the work of a miniature painter.'
