Four cards given by Queen Mary (QM) in 1949. They were added to a blank page at front of an album given two years earlier (1947,10.11.3 (1 to 112)) with covering note reading, ‘From Queen Mary, Marlborough House, SW1’ … February 1949 ... These cards were sent to Augusta / Grand Duchess of Mecklenburgh Strelitz / by Queen Victoria in 1874, & by the / Grand Duchess’s niece May (later Queen / Mary) & her brothers Dolly & Frank of Teck – in 1876 & 1877’.
1949,0411.5275: New Year card, snowberry branches and violets surrounding five-line sentiment by ‘F.L’ titled ‘New Year Wish’ (‘The New Year cometh …as change the skies.’). Chromolithograph lettered ‘Marcus Ward & Co.’ (lower left) and ‘Ent. Sta. Hall’ (lower right); panel card sent by Queen Victoria to Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, 1874, inscr. in ink on reverse: ‘To / dear Augusta / with every good / wish for the new / year 1874/ from her / vy affc cousin / VRI’.
1949,0411.5276: Christmas greetings folder card, cream notepaper with vignette print of robin in snow, ivy and church tower possibly designed by John Leighton (‘Luke Limner’); with printed message: ‘Listen … Blessings bring to thee’; publ. ?Charles Goodall & Son. Pen and black ink inscription by ten year-old Princess May (QM): ‘and many / happy returns / of the new / year, prays / your loving / little May’, and in blue ink: ‘1877’. Addressed to Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Lithograph, with hand colouring, panel card, possibly publ. Louis Prang & Co.; signed on reverse: ‘Frank’, followed by ‘[?]June 1876’ in ?recipient’s hand. Addressed to Augusta, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz

- These are evidently the earliest cards in Queen Mary's collection.
Buday attributes the design of 1949,0411.5276 to John Leighton (‘Luke Limner’), and identifies the publisher as Goodall & Son (see G. Buday, The history of the Christmas Card (1964, edn), p.100, repr. pl.19).
