This is an early impression print from the third state, before the 1920 Richter edition.

A heavy surface tone has been left by the printer in wiping most of the plate; only the hands and face of the unidentified woman have been clean-wiped. Later commentators have described the woman as being pregnant, which seems quite possible. The preparatory drawing is Nagel 143.
