This is an interesting example of a print in which the mechanically ruled grain is the only tone in the plate, which suggests that we are here dealing with a photogravure. The engraved lines were only added in the second state. (The possibly unique impression of the first state was sold at Kornfeld in Bern in June 1969, auction 132, lot 730.) The area along the left side of the jaw which looks as if it has been abraded has in fact suffered from faulty transfer.
