- Curator's comments
- This is the second plate from Kollwitz's series 'Bauernkrieg' (The Peasants' Revolt), a cycle based on the Peasants' Revolt of 1522-5, which occurred in Germany during the Protestant Reformation. The Verbindung für historische Kunst (Society for Historical Art) commissioned the series, then published and distributed the seven plates to its members in 1908.

Seven preparatory drawings for this print are known (Nagel 417-23), of which four are meticulous studies of foliage and plants. In the drawings the head of the child looking over the fence in the background is more easily noticed.
Werner Schmid ('Jahrbuch der staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden' 1967, p.86) made the interesting discovery that Kollwitz's source for the figure was a drawing by Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) of a dead man, which was used as frontispiece for the 1885 Paris edition of Camille Lemonnier's 'Le Mort'. The way in which the foreshortened head is dominated by the horseshoe shape of the jaw in both images is very noticeable. Kollwitz reused the same figure in a woodcut 'The widow' of 1922-3 (Klipstein 181: plate 5 of the 'Krieg' cycle).
For a discussion of the series see text from Frances Carey & Antony Griffiths, 'The Print in Germany 1880-1933', BM 1984, nos.34-40.
