- Curator's comments
This is one of the BM's three impressions which sequence different states of the same plate. Like the other two impressions, it features the addition of gold in the background; here, gold paint is added with a brush. This addition was not intended to define corrections to be incorporated into the next state; rather, the gold has a purely decorative function.
The BM sequence testifies to Kollwitz's complex printmaking process, which involved the layering of tone and texture. For this composition, she began with several preparatory drawings (Nagel 239-45), including the initial self-portrait with her young son, Peter. One of these drawings (apparently the drawing now in Stuttgart, Nagel 242) served as the basis for the transfer to the plate. The texture of the laid paper was added in the second state, created by pressing a sheet of Ingres paper onto the plate prepared for a soft-ground etching. In this, the third state, she added engraved lines.

The sequence of three impressions of different states of this plate is the most remarkable treasure of Campbell Dodgson's collection of Kollwitz's work. A discussion of how she developed the plate is given under 1949,0411.3928.
