- Curator's comments
- See Sue Welsh Reed and Barbara Stern Shapiro, 'Edgar Degas, the painter as printmaker', Boston 1984, cat.32. They point out that the setting is out of doors, and hence the traditional title must be wrong. This was made on a daguerreotype plate, and is one of four known impressions. For further discussion of the technique of this print, see Kimberley Schenck, 'Defined by Light' in Jodi Hauptman, 'Degas: A Strange New Beauty', exhibition catalogue, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2016, pp 63-4 (impression from Ursula and R. Stanley-Johnson Family Collection illustrated).
