In this and 1949,0411,23 drawings Gill worked up further the composition seen in 1920,1211.1 study. Campbell Dodgson, who bequeathed this drawing to the British Museum, was a former Keeper of the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum and a great benefactor to his department. He purchased this drawing in 1918 directly from the artist, along with another similar study. Since he also ran the graphic fund of the Contemporary Art Society, it is very likely that he acquired these and the 1920,1211.1 drawing at the same time.
