- Curator's comments
- From a set of designs from cartoons submitted in competition for a premium of five hundred pounds offered by the Art Union of London for an original picture illustrative of British History in 1844. Twenty-eight pictures were submitted and the prize given to H C Selous for 'Queen Philippa interceding for the lives of the Burgesses of Calais'. This prize picture was to be engraved when completed; meanwhile, 'The Art Journal' published reduced outline etchings of seven others which were deemed particularly good, for distribution among the subscribers, on 1 March 1847 with another pair: 'The Last Embrace' and 'The Neapolitan Wedding'. A prefatory sheet with explanatory notes and reference texts where applicable for each print is kept with this print. (see 1848,0108.24)
