- Description
-
A broadside on the murder of Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey in 1678, claiming that his death is linked to Titus Oates's 'Popish Plot'; with an engraving showing in the top centre an oval portrait of Godfrey, the spandrels of which show the Fire of London, and the planned massacre of Londoners by Catholics; beneath is (1) a full-length image of King Charles II with, on one side, Conyers, Anderton and four Irish ruffians who plan to shoot or stab him, and on the other side those who plan to kill him by poison, Sir George Wakeman, Groves and Pickering. At top left are four portraits illustrating the "discoverers" of the plot: Oates; Bedloe; Prance and Dugdale. On either side are ten scenes illustrating the plot and murder of Godfrey: (2) five conspirators seated round a table on which is the papal tiara, the devil encouraging them and Oates eavesdropping; (3) Oates and Tonge laying information before Justice Godfrey; (4) a pretended quarrel between Berry and Kelly; (5) Godfrey strangled while attempting to intervene; (6) Green twisting Godfrey's neck; (7) Godfrey's body seen by people as if alive; (8) the body taken by sedan chair by Kelly, Green, Gerald and Prance; (9) the body carried on horseback to Primrose Hill supported by Hills in company with the other murderers; (10) Gerald running the body through with a sword to suggest suicide; (11) the alleged murderers taken to the place of execution; (12) their execution. With engraved inscriptions, letterpress title and lengthy text, including references to the images, relating the supposed history of the plot; at the top is a dedication to Anthony, Earl of Shaftesbury.
