Ring-binder album bound in blue leather and leatherette, with gold tooling; paper label on spine inscr.: ‘1900-1908’. Note in QM’s hand pasted inside front board of album: ‘Christmas and New / Year Cards sent to / Queen Mary.’ Album comprises 37 unnumbered pages; it was previously used by KGV for stamp collecting, see his notes in the margins. Cards are pasted on recto only as pages are back-lined with tissue paper; some the glue material remains strong. Some signs of brown staining offsetting on the page (72, 75). Most pages were dated at time of compilation, and many later inscribed in QM’s mature hand, identifying the correspondents.
Most of the cards addressed to QM [in 1900 she was Duchess of York and in November 1901 became Princess of Wales], often jointly with KGV.
The cards in album are predominantly British, mainly commercial greetings cards for Christmas and New Year; some ten cards made in Germany, Austria and Norway; a further five possibly made in France. Note that most of the cards sent to QM and KGV by their continental relations were produced in England. Overall, they reflect period taste for simpler designs, more monochromatic images with photographic elements, and display a range of embossed or impressed lettering in early twentieth century fonts. About 15 of the cards incorporate photographic portraits, some as real photographs but mostly as postcards. About 15 of the 79 cards are hand painted; about ten items appear unconnected with Christmas.
Remarkable items include: QV’s last Christmas and New Year cards (1, 8); a cheque for ‘Ten Thousand Joys’ drawn on ‘The Bank of Blessings, Unlimited, Blissville’, 1907 (71); a colour photograph of the Neptune Grotto, Sanssouci Park, Potsdam, 1904 (29); an early celluloid Christmas card, 1904 (24); postcards of German war ships from Wilhelm II (5, 16).
