- Hay was well-known as a 'bear leader' who would take responsibility for educating young gentlemen in the sights of Rome; between 1704 and 1729 he accompanied at least eight Grand Tourists. The drawing was engraved by Pond in reverse (1979,U.842; 1977,U.442; 1948,0217.7).
