The attribution to Ferri is recorded in an inscription by Alessandro Maggiori ('L Suppl.', 3005b), one of the drawing's former owners. Although an alternative one to Lazzaro Baldi (q.v.) was at one time considered (by both Pouncey and Turner, in pencil notes formerly on the reverse of the old backing), the drawing could be by the Tuscan Cortonesque artist Giuseppe Nicola Nasini (1657-1736). There are several stylistic parallels with a drawing in the collection which is unquestionably by Nasini (inv.no. 1946,0713.899).
