- Lit.: N. Turner, 'Italian Drawings in the BM, Roman Baroque Drawings', London, 1999, I, no. 129
As the traces of glue-size on the verso indicate only too clearly, the sheet was once laid down on canvas.
On entering the collection, the drawing was kept with the anonymous Italian drawings arranged by subject, under the category 'saints'. The present attribution to Ludovico Gimignani was suggested by Turner. The recto appears to be a study for the same commission as Ludovico's drawing of 'Christ Communicating a Female Saint' in the Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt (inv.no.AE 1721; Rome, 1979-80(c), p.68 and fig. 57). Fischer Pace connected the drawing at Darmstadt with the painting of 'The Communion of S. Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi' on the right-hand wall of the Aquilanti Chapel in S.Maria di Montesanto, decorated c. 1660, though in the painted version the figure of Christ is replaced by that of St Augustine (Rome, 1979-80(c), fig. 56).
The two sketches of 'Christ in Glory' on the verso are probably alternative studies for the fresco on the ceiling of the Aquilanti Chapel, for which see T,12.57.
