Curator's comments
Lit.: A.E. Popham, 'Catalogue of Drawings in the Collection formed by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., F.R.S., now in the possession of his Grandson, T. Fitzroy Phillipps Fenwick of Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham', London, 1935, p. 162, no. 1; J.A. Gere and P. Pouncey, 'Italian drawings in the BM, Artists working in Rome', London, 1983, no. 260 Gere & Pouncey 1983 There is little or no basis for assessing the reliability of the old attribution to Cesare Rossetti, but the style of the drawing fits with what can be inferred about the artist, that he was a follower of Arpino without any very definite personality of his own. We therefore leave it under his name. Literature: Popham, Fenwick, p. 162, no. 1
