Fitzroy Phillipps Fenwick of Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham', I, London, 1935, p. 122, no. 1 (as Attributed to Bernini); N. Turner, 'Italian Drawings in the BM, Roman Baroque Drawings', London, 1999, I, no. 15
The poor condition makes the drawing's authorship difficult to judge, though the traditional attribution would appear to be correct. This is evidently a design for a fountain, but no such fountain is known. There is a certain resemblance in pose between the nereid and Bernini's marble statue of 'Truth' in the Villa Borghese, Rome (Wittkower, 1955, pls 72 and 73), a work datable to 1646-52. This drawing was probably made at about the same time.
