Gere & Pouncey 1983
In the Fenwick Catalogue as "Roman (?), sixteenth-century". Later placed under "Circle of Orazio Sammacchini", but identified by Mr. T. Clifford as a preparatory study - to judge from the careful finish and lack of 'pentimenti' it could be called a 'modello' - for the fresco in the cloister of the Escorial, decorated by Tibaldi between 1587 and 1590.
To the studies for others of the series listed by D. Angulo and A.E. Pérez-Sánchez in 'A Corpus of Spanish Drawings, i, 1400-1600', 1975, p. 58, should be added one for the 'Visitation', which recently passed through the London sale-room (Sotheby, 1975, March 13, lot 184) and is now in Mr Clifford's collection.
