Jason was the celebrated leader of the Argonauts. He came to the kingdom of Iolcos to claim it as his right from Pelias, who had long ruled over it; in an attempt to get rid of him, Pelias sent him to Colchis to fetch the golden fleece which Jason succeeded in doing with the assistance of Medea. In the drawing Jason is seen taking the ram by the horn with his left hand, ready to dispatch it with the dagger held in his right.
