An inscription in ink on the old backing "No 27 Mar [or 'Mai'] 30 87" presumbly refers to an auction-sale, but no sale of drawings on 30 March or 30 May 1787 is recorded in Lugt's 'Répertoire des Ventes'.
The collector's mark of Sir T. Lawrence's is not on the drawing, but it was included in that part of Woodburn's sale devoted to the Lawrence Collection.
