- Lit.: A.E. Popham, 'Catalogue of Drawings in the Collection formed by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart., F.R.S., now in the possession of his Grandson, T. Fitzroy Phillipps Fenwick of Thirlestaine House, Cheltenham', I, London, 1935, p. 98, no. 1 (as Rondani); A.E. Popham, 'Italian drawings in the BM, Artists working in Parma in the Sixteenth Century', London, 1967, I, no. 226, II, pl. 137A; M. Di Giampaolo ed., 'Disegni di Girolamo Bedoli 1500/1569', Naples, 1998, p. 50, no. 22 (with previous literature).
The attribution to Rondani [see Inscription] was followed in the Fenwick Catalogue. Resta does not say how he arrived at it, but if it is one of his guesses it is misleadingly near the mark, for there is every reason to suppose that both drawings are original studies by another Parmese artist of the same period, Girolamo Bedoli. 1946,0713.444b corresponds with the figure above the capital of the fourth column on the r. in the nave of Parma cathedral, which can be clearly seen in the illustration of part of the vaulting on p. 48 of Laudedeo Testi's 'La Cattedrale di Parma', Bergamo, 1934. On 5 April 1555 Bedoli undertook to decorate the whole vaulting of the nave, beginning at the end nearest the cupola. He began work in May of the same year and finished by June 1557 (cf. Testi, op. cit., pp. 47 f. and 146, note 14). I have not been able to find a figure in the decoration corresponding with 1946,0713.444a, but this study must have been made for the same purpose. Both are based on Parmigianino's decorative figures in the Steccata (cf. Freedberg, fig. 103).
