- Curator's comments
- The drawing bears an old attribution to Polidoro da Caravaggio, and a more recent one to Parmigianino. Popham with some reservation accepted the latter idea, although he did not discount the possibility that it might be by a later imitator. Oberhuber's suggestion that it is by Bertoia is not supported by De Grazia in her monograph on the artist.

Oberhuber, review of BM Parma catalogue, "Master Drawings", VIII, 1970, 3, p. 284 (as Bertoia); A.E. Popham, 'Catalogue of the Drawings of Parmigianino', New Haven and London, 1971, I, no. 194, II, pl. 290 (as Parmigianino); D. De Grazia, 'Bertoia, Mirola and the Farnese Court', Bologna, 1991, no. D/R33 (probably by Parmigianino)
In scale and character this drawing is unusual, if not unexampled, for Parmigianino, but the attribution to him, though clearly of more recent date than that to Polidoro, is very possibly correct. The type of the head and its chiaroscuro may be compared with that of Circe in the well-known drawing in the Uffizi (750E; Popham, 'Parmigianino', pl. xxii) which probably dates from the period of the artist's activity in Rome. It would be difficult to think of any other draughtsman capable of so closely approaching him; unless, as Philip Pouncey suggests might prove to be the case, the drawing is the work of some seventeenth-century imitator.
