- Popham accepted the old attribution to Luini written on the verso. Bora suggested that the drawing showed a scene from the life of St Ambrose and was connected to a payment to the artist in May 1591 to provide four designs of the saint's life for the choir stalls of Milan cathedral. This composition does not feature in the choir stalls so it is impossible to verify this.
