Gere & Pouncey 1983
The drawing was attributed to Daniele in the Lawrence-Woodburn sale catalogue. Popham accepted the attribution, and observing that the figure must have been intended for a 'Descent from the Cross' proposed a connection with the Orsini Chapel altarpiece. The suggestion is accepted by Levie and by Barolsky, who without comment includes the drawing among studies related to this picture. No figure corresponding with 1946,0713.326 occurs in the painting, but the suggestion seems to us plausible.
Tolnay follows Horster in seeing 1946,0713.326 as an elaboration of a figure roughly sketched in the lower r. corner of a drawing of the 'Descent from the Cross' in the Teyler Museum (Tolnay, 'Corpus dei disegni di Michelangelo', i, 1975, no. 89). Horster sees this as additional proof of Daniele's authorship of the Haarlem drawing; Tolnay, on the other hand, considers - in our opinion rightly - that the Haarlem drawing is by Michelangelo, and that 1946,0713.326, like the Uffizi study for the principal group in a 'Deposition' (1158E; Horster, op. cit., fig. 142), was elaborated by Daniele from a sketch by him. In our opinion the argument, in so far as it concerns 1946,0713.326, is irrelevant: not only does the figure in the Haarlem drawing appear to be kneeling on the ground, but it is so roughly sketched as to make comparison inconclusive. The only point of resemblance that we can see is that in both figures the left knee is bent.
