- A preparatory study for the lower part of the 'Marriage of the Virgin', one of the two frescoes (the other is of the 'Presentation') painted in 1567-9 by Cambiaso on the side walls of the Cappella Lercari in the Duomo di San Lorenzo, Genoa (Magnani fig. 198). Cambiaso worked on the commission alongside Giovanni Battista Castello, il Bergamasco, the two artists having already collaborated in the 1550s in the decoration of the loggias of the Villa Giustiani and the Villa Pallavicini delle Peschiere (Magnani figs 57-63). The contract for the chapel was signed by Castello in November 1564, whether Cambiaso was involved from the outset is uncertain. Before Castello's departure to Spain in 1567 he executed the frescoes in the vault and apse, as well as the stucco figures. Magnani's suggestion that Castello was responsible for the architecture in the upper half of the 'Marriage of the Virgin' was confirmed in the cleaning that revealed two distinct phases and hands. Castello's execution for the upper part explains why Cambiaso felt no need to include the architecture in the present study because its form had already been determined.
Jonathan Bober suggests that the present drawing was preceded by a study at Palermo (74/85). Workshop copies after the drawing are listed by Bober in his 2006 entry.
