- Curator's comments
- The size of this head and the scale of the squaring suggest that this drawing was cut down from a substantially larger sheet, perhaps a full scale drawing for a fresco. Neither Berenson's suggestion that the head is a study for the Archangel at the top right of the Damned at Orvieto, nor Popham and Pouncey's suggestion that it is for the head of a piping youth on the right of the now-lost 'School of Pan' is convincing.

Popham & Pouncey 1950
Regarded by Berenson as a study for the head of the archangel standing on the extreme r. at the top in the fresco of the 'Damned' at Orvieto (K. der K. 100). The resemblance does not appear to us close enough to allow of such an identification: the squaring suggests that this head was meant to be more tilted than that of the archangel. The drawing might be for the head of the piping youth on the extreme r. of the mythological composition described, 1946,0713.12 (see also 1946,0713.11); but this identification is hypothetical.
