In a note in the Keeper's copy of the Phillipps-Fenwick catalogue (Popham, 1935, I, p. 152), J.A.Gere pointed out that this is a copy of the central motif in the altarpiece of the 'Nativity' which Maratti painted in 1650 for the second altar on the left in S.Giuseppe dei Falegnami, Rome (Mezzetti, 1955, p. 334, under no.99; repr. p.258, fig. 3).
