- Curator's comments
- Not in Phillipps-Fenwick. Attribution to Figino was suggested by A.E. Popham and endorsed by Philip Pouncey. The foreground group bathing the infant, the two women behind them with a basket and Saint Anne in bed tended by a woman are similar to those in Figino's painting in the church of Sant' Antonio Abate, Milan datable to c. 1605 (R.P. Ciardi, 'Giovan Ambrogio Figino', Florence, 1968, no. 19, p. 112, illustrated p. 229). The present drawing is probably not a preparatory study for this work as it is upright in format. It might be a study for a later variant, or conversely related to an earlier composition which served as a model for the Milan work. The attribution of the present drawing is confirmed by comparison with securely attributed drawings by Figino from the Album Bossiano in the Accademia, Venice (Ciardi, 1968, nos. 300-1, p.188, figs. 221-2).U. Pace compared the present work to a drawing attributed to Macchietti in the Uffizi (695 F).
