- Curator's comments
- Brown (2012) dated this drawing in the 1670's. Popham thought the drawing might be a study for the picture in the Vatican that now is considered a follower's replica of the original painting in Lisbon (c. 1655). Mena Marqués has considered this drawing to be from an early period, not only because it is clearly related to the Lisbon painting, but also because its models and technique are from Murillo's early period. Following is an adapted translation of her text (2015):
The composition is certainly a preparatory drawing for the Lisbon painting. The technique, as pointed by Brown, is unusual in Murillo, because of the green wash and the absence of underdrawing. Instead, Mena Marqués, points out that there is a light underdrawing in soft black chalk (heads, some drapery). In the drawing of St Leander, he used a similar wash, though greyish. At his early period he seemed to try different techniques, like wash, which had already been developed by previous artists like Pacheco, Cano, Herrera el Viejo and Herrera el Mozo (see his blue and grey wash drawings at Kunsthalle, for example). The putti heads in the verso must be attributed to Murillo, even if they do not seem to be related to any of his paintings.
