- This is a design for an illustration in 'Daphnis and Chloe', a volume published by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon in 1893 (p.41). Woodblocks for the engravings illustrating this Greek myth by Longus, translated by George Thornley, were cut by the artists themselves, rather than by a professional engraver. It was executed directly onto tracing paper in preparation for transfer onto the block (and has been worked on both sides). The resulting woodblock is also in the collection at the British Museum (1937,0612.349).
This drawing sits together on the same album leaf as 1946,2809.71.
From an album of 89 drawings by Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon. For full description and comment, see 1946,0209.35 (which is the first image in the album).
