- Curator's comments
- The recto of this print is printed from two blocks only. The tone block has been printed upside down and the print touched up with red and white chalks. On the verso is a two block impression of The Martyrdom of Sts Peter and Paul (B.xii.79.28).
The attribution to Antonio da Trento comes from Hind who dated it 1520-50 but as argued by Naoko Takahatake the attribution is unlikely. All known impressions are printed on French paper with watermarks corresponding to Briquet 13073 and 13074. For a full discussion see Naoko Takahatake in 'La Sainte Anne. l'ultime chef-d'oeuvre de Léonard de Vinci', exh.cat., Paris Museé du Louvre, 2012, cat.no.99.
She now attributes it to the French blockcutter Douet who was working in the mid-XVIc (personal communication, 2020), and the print is now placed under him.
