Illustrated volume of Giorgio Vasari, 'Le vite de' piu eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori... prima, e seconda parte' (Florence: Giunti, 1568). Title-page: ornate architectural frame supported by figures and surmounted by Medici coat of arms; title in cartouche at top, supported by putti, vignette of Florence in cartouche below, supported by satyresses; on verso of title-page, (part of) the same frame with design of the Last Judgement, men being raised from the ground by a winged figure blowing a three-ended trumpet and holding a torch, watched by female figures representing Painting, Sculpture and Architecture; below, motto in cartouche: 'Hac sospite nunquam hos periisse viros, victos aut morte fatebor.' Preceding main text, bust portrait of the author in oval lettered 'Giorgio Vasarii pittore et architetto Aretino.', in (part of) the same frame as the title-page; below, vignette of Florence in cartouche.

- The volume is stamped on the spine: 'Vasari Vite de Pittori Tom: 1.'; the first (blank) page is inscribed in brownish ink '48th - 3 vol.', and there are a small number of other marks in brown ink in the text. The title-page and following six pages have suffered an area of loss near the spine of the book, probably from woodworm, and have been infilled and the missing areas of image and text redrawn in brown ink.
For the third part (in two volumes), see pressmarks 159.b.6,7. The volumes previously belonged to a Thomas Brand, whose bookplate (Franks 3543) is inside the front cover of each.
