The drawing is after a painting by Bernardino Luini, now in the National Gallery, London (NG18). Resta, who thought it by Leonardo, saw it when it was in the collection of the Princess Olimpia Aldobrandini ('principessa di Rossano') in the Galleria Doria Pamphilj. However, several copies exist of the painting (for instance NG 2088).
