- This drawing is in Volume II of the Fourth Series of Downman's 'First Sketches of Portraits of distinguished persons'. For further details see 1936,1116.27.1.
This is a study for a group portrait of the Larking family (1936,1116.28.20) combined with other individual studies in this volume (1936,1116.28.10 and 12-19). Three studies for parts of the group are also in the museum in an album compiled by Isabella Chloe Benjamin (1884.0426.16-18), the latter two of which differ considerably from the final composition.
For notes on the finished portrait see Curatorial Comment to 1936,1116.28.20.
