- This drawing is in Volume I of the Fourth Series of Downman's 'First Sketches of Portraits of distinguished persons'. For further details see 1936,1116.27.1.
This accompanies, in the same volume, studies of her husband Lewis Way and four of her children, Drusilla, Albert, Anna Mary, and Olivia; Lewis' brothers Benjamin and William, and the latter's wife (1936,1116.27.6-7, and 9-15). The Department also owns the finished portrait of Mary Drewe from this study, plus a group of the four children, and one of Lewis' grandfather (1927.1210.1-3) given by Albert's granddaughter, another Olivia. Those of Mary and the children were commissioned for Lewis Way to take on his travels to Russia in 1817-18.
The Fitzwilliam Museum has other studies of the wider Way family from the second series, volumes 2 and 5 (Munro, Jane, 'John Downman 1750-1824: Landscape, figure studies and portraits of 'Distinguished persons' (Cambridge 1996), no.1933, pp.50-51 and 92, and nos. 1934, 1859 and 1862, p.92). The Way Family were some of Downman's most prolific patrons.
