Label text, 'Genoa, Superb Line' (2023-4):
By the mid-eighteenth century Genoa's wealth and power were in decline, but the city's art and architecture still attracted discerning visitors. One arrival was the young Fragonard, who came in Summer 1761. These sketches of Genoese landmarks belong to a group of seventy-one studies of paintings and buildings Fragonard saw during his journey through Italy to Paris in the company of Jean-Claude Richard, the Abbé de Saint-Non.
