- Curator's comments
- For commentary on this group of black chalk Fragonard drawing see 1936,0509.1.
The detail from Giordano's ceiling fresco is one of eight (seven of which are in the BM) copied from the gallery of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi (Rosenberg and Brejon De Lavergnée 1986, nos 156-163, pp. 372-374). Saint-Non wrote admiringly of the ceiling in his journal: 'pour moi, c'est une des choses qui m'ait fait le plus de plaisir dans toute l'Italie' (for me, it is one of the works that has given me most pleasure in all of Italy). A counterproof after this drawing is in the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena (Ananoff no. 1836)
