- Description
-
Maria Foote, plainly dressed and demure in cap and apron, stands in the dock (right) between Col. Berkeley, a ragged ruffian, and Hayne, a lunatic in a strait-jacket. Above the dock is a slanting board inscribed Reflection. John Bull, in judge's robes, sits in an arm-chair on a dais (left). He faces the culprits, saying, Your sentence Miss Trip Foot, is that you be sent to the Magdalen for a Season, there to repent and be purified. You Mr Backbite to the House of Correction, and there to be treading the Tread Mill [see BM Satires 14406], untill a total reform is evinced. As for you Mr Peagreen! the Court in commiseration of your Malady consign you to St Lukes for a Twelve-month as an experiment on your Case. And may the public have mercy on you all. Berkeley, who is heavily fettered, says: Pray Mr Bull be merciful for when I am made a Peer, I shall turn Saint and appoint Dick, Fletcher my Domestic Chaplain!! as I fear I shall never be able to Kneel again. Hayne, whose head is shaved, capers with an insane grin, saying, I've Kissed and I've prattled with fifty [fair maids] &c &c. [Beggar's Opera]. A clerk sits at the table, staring at the dock. On the table are a mace and papers: Indictments; Watehouse [sic, see BM Satires 14274] Foot, &c &c; Charges; Bastardy; Letters ; Dr . . .; Dr Leake. Behind, grave spectacled lawyers are indicated.
